Understanding vehicle roof load limits
Share
One of the most common concerns for customers considering a roof tent is whether their vehicle can safely support it. At Escapade, we understand how important it is to have clear, reliable information when making such a purchase. Let's break down what you need to know:
Key Concepts:
Dynamic Roof Load Limit – This refers to the maximum weight your vehicle’s roof can safely carry while the car is in motion. It's important to ensure this weight limit can handle the combined weight of the roof tent, any additional gear, and accessories. We talk about how to find this information later on.
Static Roof Load Limit – This figure represents the weight your roof can support when the vehicle is stationary. Since a roof tent distributes its load over a larger surface area, most vehicles can safely support up to 5x static load than the dynamic load. This generally allows for a roof tent, roof bars and 2-3 people comfortably sleeping. However, it's always best to check your vehicle's specific limit in the owner's manual or speaking to the manufacturer directly.
Roof Bars and Racks – Make sure to use high-quality roof bars or racks rated to handle the weight of the roof tent. These act as an essential support system for the tent and any additional weight when camping. The roof rack or bars are the primary point of contact for supporting your roof tent when stationary and in motion. We strongly recommend purchasing trusted, high-quality roof bars - this is not the time to be frugal.
We sell high-quality roof racks, designed for larger vehicles. Our roof racks are made of anodised & powder-coated aluminium. They are lightweight, will never rust and are incredibly hard-wearing. You can find them here.
Vehicle-Specific Considerations – Not all vehicles are made the same. For instance, SUVs and larger 4x4s tend to have higher roof load capacities compared to saloons or hatchbacks. Always refer to your vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines to confirm your roof’s capabilities.
Common Concerns:
-
Will my roof collapse?
This is a valid concern, but modern vehicles, when used within their static and dynamic load limits, can easily support an Escapade roof tent. The roof of a car is designed to support the wight of the car in the event of rolling during a crash. -
How do I ensure my tent is secure when driving?
The key is using the correct roof bars and following manufacturer instructions for mounting. Escapade tents are designed for both safety and ease of use. We also fit our roof tents free of charge. We do this partly to sweeten the deal, but also for your safety and the safety of other road users. -
What about fuel efficiency?
While placing a roof tent on your vehicle will impact aerodynamics, higher-quality roof bars and driving adjustments will minimise the effect on fuel consumption.
